Ouch

I went on another 9 mile hike yesterday. In addition to completely destroying the backs of my ankles with my wet tennis shoes (the hike involved copious amounts of water crossing), slicing open my legs on sharp, spear-tipped desert plants (I think they are yucca plants but I'm not sure, dang they hurt) and clumsily walking head-first into a low-lying branch, I also was lunch for an unidentified giant mutant freak bug. Here's the red, itchy aftermath:

Its kind of hard to tell in the photograph because it was taken with my cheap webcam, but if you notice the approximate relation of size between my hand and the welt, you can get a relatively good idea how big this thing is. It wasn't a bee, it wasn't a horsefly (or maybe it was) but regardless of its species, it has left me with immeasurable itchiness.

Does anyone out there happen to know what kind of bug could do this? It was a bite, not a sting. No stingers were found, nor do bee stings make me itch this badly. The hydrocortisone cream...it does nothing.

It flew slowing and lazily but didn't have a loud buzz. It was black and had thick, beetle-like wings (as opposed to gossamer bee wings). To help you armchair entomologists identify this vicious mofo, I have made an "Artists rendering" of what I remember the bug looking like:Note the bloody fangs and claws, and the distinct markings on its back. In general I do like insects, they don't bother me so much, but in this case whatever bit me is truly a six-legged arbiter of pure evil.

Well, that’s one way to garner comments – show photos of obscure bits of flesh, bitten or bruised or otherwise!

Obviously you took my advice on those sex blogs!
