I Got Big Balls
I went out to happy hour with my friend from work. He's a nice guy, we're just buddies, and when we hang out I mostly get to hear about him talk about his girlfriend (who is awesome) and he gets to hear me talk crap about the guys I am dating/want to date/who want to date me. Fun times; he reminds me a lot of my brother Matt since our sense of humor is around the same.
So while we were at the bar I noticed this guy walking around trying to order a beer. He was nicely dressed, kind of good-looking even. Pretty darn attractive actually. Blonde, curly hair, nice eyes, etc. So I said to my friend "Hey that guy is really cute" and he said "You should say something to him about it." I laughed and he said "No, seriously, if a girl did that to me I'd be so thrilled." I said I could NOT bring myself to just walk up to someone and tell them that I saw them across the bar and thought they were attractive, especially if the guy hadn't had a beer yet, and it was happy hour on a Monday. Not exactly "pick up" time.
But the more I thought about it, the more I figured "What the hell? What's the worst that could happen?" I checked and he had no wedding ring. He wasn't with anyone, he was just sitting at a table by himself. So with prodding and encouragement from my friend, I was determined to grow some balls and tell someone to their face they were good-looking. What the hell.
So I did. On my way out the restaurant, I walked up to the guy and said "Excuse me. I was having a drink with my friend over there, and I saw you and said to him that I thought you were good-looking. He told me I should tell you that...so, I don't usually just go up to people to tell them things like that, but I thought that this time I would be brave enough to do so. And...yeah, so, I didn't know if you were waiting for someone, and I'm sorry if I interrupted something, but I just wanted to tell you that."
I got a smile...more of a polite, "that's nice" kind of smile. And with that he wasn't so cute anymore. Dammit I put myself OUT there. I just totally complimented you, out of the blue, on a Monday afternoon. Maybe I shocked him, I dunno. I wasn't looking for his number or anything, just the sheer thrill of doing something so completely out of my realm. He thanked me, told me he was waiting for someone ("About 10 people actually, just a big group...") and I excused myself and said well have a good night.
My face red, but feeling kind of badass, I walked out to the smiles of more than a few girls who had overheard the whole situation. Maybe they thought I was slutty. Maybe they thought I was crazy. Maybe they thought "What a brave person, damn." I felt brave. Its hard to break out of that box and put yourself out there; it takes balls to tell someone they're cute.
