She's So Wonderful

My life is sometimes a series of missed boats. I fall in love with a band, or a comedian, or something, right after that "boat" leaves the harbor. Its a cruel injustice, because it means my life with those things I've fallen in love with is limited to what I already know, and the little I can discover posthumously.

The Beta Band is perhaps the greatest example of objective love injustice. I was introduced to the Beta Band by my dear friend Paul, who at the time was an intern at the Astralwerk's record label, and would often bring home CD's for me to enjoy. Astralwerks, by the way, is what I consider to be one of the coolest labels around, boasting acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Royksopp, Air, u-Ziq, Kraftwerk, Kings of Convenience, The Faint, and Badly Drawn Boy. Anyway so the Beta Band's "Three EPs" was highly recommended, and trusting Paul's judgement as always, I gave it a whirl.

Some people say that the book "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac changed their life. Others say they had an eye-opening dream, or a near-death experience. For me, the Beta Band opened up my ears to the music that would probably define my own adult aesthetic. The soft vocals, creative melodies, layering, everything. If I had to be on a deserted island with music from one band, it would be the Beta Band.

And yet for as much as I love the music, I don't become a fan. And by "fan" I mean I don't buy all their concert tickets, or have their band's homepage as my "start" website. And by not being a fan, I missed the fact that sometime earlier this year, they broke up. Broke up! They just put out a masterful final opus with "Heroes to Zeros" and I was cruising their website FINALLY to see about upcoming concerts, and according to Google, my favorite band hasn't been a band for almost a full year. How did I miss that? How could I possibly have missed that boat? How unfair is that...blink and you miss things. I just love the music. I'm miffed I missed the opportunity to see them. Now all I can hope for us a reunion tour.

I recalled all the other boats I've missed. When an ex-boyfriend loaned me a CD by Morphine, I grooved to the bass sax and the singers awesome baritone. I told him this would be an awesome band to see live, and he broke it to me that the band broke up when the lead singer with the amazing voice had died, drug overdose. I also have always liked Mitch Hedberg after being turned onto him about 2 years ago, and earlier this April he also died of a heart attack and speculated drug overdose. There are others, but those two stand out the most to me because once I started to love them, I realized there would never be any more to enjoy. Maybe God wants all the good music and comedy to himself, I don't know. Just leave some for the rest of us here. I better treasure what I love right now before any more boats set sail.
