Good Pain, Bad Pain

In one day it is possible to experience a whole gamut of pain. Some pain is good, some pain is bad. Some examples:

Good pain: Post-workout soreness

Bad pain: The heartache of seeing a former flame burning hot with someone who is not you

Good pain: Cramps (yes, those kind.) I dunno. For me these are a good pain. Oh, they hurt badly, but they remind me monthly that everything is working as it should.

Bad pain: Headaches, especially those one that get behind your eyes.

Good pain: Deep-tissue massage. Feels so bad its awesome.

Bad pain: Being in the same room as a former friend and knowing you can't talk to them.

Good pain: The tingly sensation once a body part wakes up from "being asleep" (I like that!)

Bad pain: Papercuts.

Good pain: Seeing someone so beautiful and untouchable, and knowing your love is unrequited (its so much more romantic that way)

Bad pain: Ear infections. Someone I know at work has one of these, and I feel so bad for the guy...your whole HEAD hurts - ears, eyes, jaws, brain, neck, etc. You want to die.

Good pain: I've heard childbirth is actually a good sort of pain. I've never had a baby, so I can't speak for myself, but my mother once described it as "the most pleasure she's ever felt in her life." Is she off-base?

Bad pain: Fundamental loss. Loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, loss of faith, loss of self.

I am daring a generalization here, but the 'good pain/bad pain' thang may be primarlily a female concept --- within the norm of society's values, that is. The S&M crowd is whole other enchillada.

I don't know too many guys who can think of a good pain. We're either big babies about it or we ignore it (or seem to).
